NOT GRANDMA'S GLASS - VIRTUAL EXHIBITION
For 2021 Habatat Galleries offers a year long competition exhibition titled Not Grandma’s Glass.
The story goes when Aaron Schey started his career at the gallery the topic of a client's collection would often arise. When family was brought up the collectors would mention that the artwork in their home was referred to by the next generation as “Oh that’s just Grandma’s Glass.”
This exhibition/competition offers 12 unique online presentations by 12 artist that are pushing the medium beyond the norm. One per month. Creating work that is probably not in Grandma’s art collection…..yet. These artists are extremely innovative and Schey proposes that they will all be important in the future of the glass medium.
The invited artists are: Morgan Peterson, Matthew Eskuche, Michael Janis & Tony Porto, John Moran, Jon "Shaggy" Boley", Chad Fonfara, Petr Herbackova, Caterina Urrata Weintraub, Joseph Ivacic, Dean Allison, Anthony Amoaka Attah and Krista Israel.
Krista Israel (The Netherlands) is an artist with a main focus on glass. Looking at her work it is like entering a story. The artworks are pleasing to eye but there is a layer of bittersweetness in everyone of them. Her works are in a realistic style, but it is not about the abvious reality - it must be viewed past the tinsel and rhinestones. Krista is an artist who uses a broad variety of techniques, using the natural characteristics of glass to express her thoughts and refections of the world an people and thus address the needs of our wellbeing. The combination of different techniques and her thoughts make her work complex and intruiging - Helene Besancon, curator National Glass Museum, the Netherlands, for Neues Glass Magazine #2&3, 2020
