Until The Answer Comes,
Or A Worry Dissapears
A rocking chair in which many of us were cradled when we were babies. The pandemic was the time for this work to emerge - it brings back a sense of safety, security, wellbeing. Making such a large work was a huge challenge. At the same time, crafting the tens of thousands parts for the glass fur was a grip to hold on to. Not worrying, not thinking, just creating. The repetitive work is something that makes sense, being in control in a time were so many things are out of our control.
A vintage chair, that has cradled 2 generations, is covered in over 45.000 flameworked glass parts. Each part is handmade and cold assembled to the chair, table and the telephone. The worn down parts of the chair like the seat, this texture is made of small cut pieces of glass rod. In contradiction to the flameworked texture wich is 'soft' to the touch, the seat is scratchy. The table cloth is made of white uberfang glass, draped at low temperture over a kilnshelf. The horn of the vintage telephone is dangling over the side of the table, to highlight the the waiting, or maybe the answer that has come.
I have been toying with the idea of a glass rocking chair about 8 years ago, but while making some small samples in casting I realized it was not its time yet to become physical. With the invitation for NGG, the challenge to make a dreamwork, that moment had arrived. Although it took me several months after the invitation to see the time for this work had come.
This piece has all the elements I had been dreaming of for years - making an installation, a glass fur piece that is tactile and through touch gains an extra dimension for it's viewers, a work that has motion. The installation took 7 months to complete.
